Heart. Hand. Hope.
While visiting the island of Sicily and the beach town of San Vito Lo Capo (my great grandmothers birthplace), off the mainland of Italy in 2015, I discovered a beautiful symbol. This symbol is the Trinacria. Sicily, an island triangular in shape, is represented by the Trinacria, consisting of Medusa’s head with three bent legs coming out from it, each leg for the three different corners, or capes, of the region. The Sicilian flag features the Trinacria and Sicily was known by the Romans as Trinacrium, meaning “star with three points.”
I’ve always been proud of my Italian heritage, from my grandmother and mother teaching me how make raviolis from scratch, to big family meals we’ve shared over the years and ‘family recipe’ spaghetti and meatballs my mom made each year for my birthday. After my visit to my great grandmothers’ front door in Sicily I was inspired to create a business that, from the forefront, focused on three values (my own star with three points).
And so, Davey was created with my own Trinacria at the core. My logo incorporates several triangles with each point representing the three values that guide the mission of my business: to create with heart, hand and hope. Heart, for working and living with passion. Hand, for making products with my own hands to the highest standards. Hope, for bringing a bit of hope to our world by being a 1% for the planet member and donating another 9% of net profits each year to art and education related non-profit organizations in the Pacific Northwest. The triangle also honors three generations of creative, do-it-yourself, women in my life: great grandmother, grandmother and mother, that passed down their love of art and of the handmade and have inspired me beyond words. And finally, a triangle representing a snow-capped mountain. I am a mountain girl at heart. I feel very fortunate to have had mountains in my life from a young age and be continually surrounded and inspired by them living in the beautiful Pacific NW.
A bit old-fashioned
I am a maker and have been since a very young age. I am admittedly old-fashioned (as in, sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong century!) and appreciate the hum of my 1940’s Singer sewing machine, the opening and closing of an antique platen letterpress, and the “tap-taps” from my knitting needles knocking together. I thrive in quiet moments of working through the process of each handmade item. While honing my hand making skills, I’ve found that at my core, the simple aspect of making and creating the products featured on this site, give me immense joy and satisfaction. Over the years, I’ve gifted hats and bags and random artistic pieces to friends and family. There is nothing like the feeling of giving something made by hand. I hope that through purchasing and gifting my products you will find this feeling too.
